How to talk so others will listen

As a mountain bike guide I spend a lot of time talking to people, whether that’s talking to people online to show that I am the right choice for them for their coaching or guiding needs, or once we’re on our bikes in the woods and I’m talking them through skills they want to develop.

Speaking isn’t as easy as we all think, especially not if we want to communicate effectively.  All too often communication break downs are blamed on the listener not paying attention.  As an outdoor professional we are trained to teach through different learning styles.  Whilst that is important, taking a step back and considering how we speak could be just as valuable.

This great TED lecture highlights some of the key elements we need so when we talk our audience will listen, or find it easier to listen.

And hey, who doesn’t want to feel they are being heard a little better?
