Death of a duct tape tyre repair

My front tyre has a couple of holes in it.  Instead of replacing it (like most normal people would) I decided to use it as a test piece for the durability of tyre boot repair methods.

Sticking your tyre back together with duct tape is a popular quick fix but not one anyone expects to last longer than the ride home.  Hole 1 was repaired last August and hole 2 was repaired in mid January.  The duct tape on hole 1 has finally given up, after about 350miles.  Repair 2 has had six weeks hard use and done over 200miles and is still going strong.

So it seems the duct tape ‘get you home’ last a lot longer than anyone realised.

All the same, if you tyre splits buy a new one, the duct tape is lasting but my nerves are shot, every downhill I’m expecting the duct tape to spectacularly give up and for a massive front wheel blow out.

Hole 1: Silver duct tape, 6months old, 350+ miles.                       Hole 2: Black duct tape, 6 weeks old, 200+ miles.
