This weekend saw a trip down to Brecon for the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Assessor’s course, not having a car and Brecon not having a train station meant it turned into a bit more of an adventure…
I got the train to Abergavenny and then with a nicely loaded up singlespeed spun my way up the road to Brecon, the weather was perfect, crisp, cold and clear blue skies with stunning views across the Black Mountains and Brecon Beacons. I rolled into town just before sunset and found myself a spot on the edge of town by the side of the river to string up my hammock for the night. Dinner on the stove followed by hot chocolate curled up in my sleeping bag and off to a slightly chilly nights sleep.
The next day on the course everyone else had driven, and slept in a bed the previous night. Sure my feet were cold ALL night and my knees ached a little from the singlespeed (gears will be bought soon) but my trip to Brecon was a beautiful and memorable one.
If you’ve not been out on the bike recently, or haven’t camped out in the cold pack your bags, get on your bike and go for a mini winter adventure, if nothing else it’ll give you a good excuse to sit by the fire eating cake all afternoon when you get back.
